Oxcarbazepine is an anticonvulsant medication primarily used in the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder. It works by stabilizing electrical activity in the brain, thereby reducing the occurrence of seizures and stabilizing mood swings in bipolar disorder.

Oxcarbazepine is used as a monotherapy or adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial seizures in adults and children over the age of six.
It is also used as a mood stabilizer in the treatment of bipolar disorder to prevent manic and depressive episodes.

Oxcarbazepine is thought to exert its anticonvulsant effects by blocking voltage-sensitive sodium channels, which reduces the spread of abnormal electrical activity in the brain associated with seizures. It may also have effects on other neurotransmitter systems, including glutamate and GABA, which play roles in mood regulation.
