Dutasteride is a medication primarily used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition characterized by enlargement of the prostate gland in men. It is also prescribed off-label for the treatment of male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia).

Dutasteride is used to reduce the size of the prostate gland and improve urinary symptoms associated with BPH, such as urinary frequency, urgency, weak stream, and nocturia.
Dutasteride is sometimes used off-label to treat male pattern baldness by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is believed to contribute to hair loss.

Dutasteride belongs to a class of medications called 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. It works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). By reducing DHT levels in the body, dutasteride helps shrink the prostate gland and alleviate symptoms of BPH. In the context of male pattern baldness, it may also help slow down hair loss and promote hair regrowth.
